EDUCATION GLOSSARY
To help overcome any confusion regarding educational jargon used throughout this site we have a comprehensive glossary below listing terms and words that you may need help with.
A’Level Schools
Advanced level schools. Refers to schools having facilities to take on students from O’Level. This normally takes 2 years and it mainly for 17 to 18 year old students.
Acholi Schools
Schools located in the Acholi Sub-Region of Northern Uganda.
Ankole Schools
Schools located in the Ankole Sub-Region of Western Uganda.
BTVET Schools
Business technical vocational education and training schools.
Buganda Schools
Schools located in the Buganda Sub-Region of Central Uganda.
Bukedi Schools
Schools located in the Bukedi Sub-Region of Eastern Uganda.
Bunyoro Schools
Schools located in the Bunyoro Sub-Region of Western Uganda.
Busoga Schools
Schools located in the Busoga Sub-Region of Eastern Uganda.
Boarders
Students that live-in at school. The students that do not live-in are called Day Students.
Boarding schools
Schools that have live-in facilities.
Boys Schools
Schools that only cater to male students only.
Catholic Schools
Schools that are based on Catholic faith.
Central Schools
Schools found in Central Uganda
Church of Uganda Schools
Schools that are based on the Anglican faith of the church of England.
Combined Schools
Schools where Primary and Secondary school is on the same campus (in same location)
Community schools
Schools run by the community where they are located
Community Founded Schools
Schools founded by the community where they are located
Co-education Schools
See mixed Schools.
Day Schools
Schools that don’t have live-in facilities for students.
Day Students
In schools that have Boarding students, the students that don’t live-in are commonly called Day Students.
Early Childhood Development(ECD)
See Nursery Schools.
Eastern Schools
Schools found in the Eastern Region of Uganda.
Elgon Schools
Schools located in the Elgon Sub-Region of Eastern Uganda.
Entrepreneurs Schools
Schools founded by Entrepreneurs
Featured Schools
Schools that have paid to have more details about the school presented on the directory
Girls Schools
School that cater to only female students
Government schools
Schools which are operated by State or Territory Governments’ education departments.
Government Founded Schools
Schools that are founded by the State or Territory Governments where they are located.
High School
A term or a name for Secondary school.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
The International Baccalaureate Diploma is recognised by universities nationally and internationally. The IB is offered by some schools across Uganda.
International Schools
Schools that offer internationally accepted curriculums in Uganda for example International Baccalaureate, Cambridge and more
Islamic Schools
Schools founded on the Islamic faith mostly by the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council
Karamoja Schools
Schools located in the Karamoja Sub-Region of Northern Uganda.
Kigezi Schools
Schools located in the Kigezi Sub-Region of Western Uganda.
Kindergarten
In Uganda refers to earlier learning before Preparatory or Pre-Prep years
Lango Schools
Schools located in the Lango Sub-Region of Northern Uganda.
Mixed Schools
Schools that cater for both female and male students.
MoES
Ministry of Education and Sports Uganda
NCDC
National Curriculum Development Center Uganda.
Northern Schools
Schools located in the Noerthern Region of Uganda
Nursery Schools
Pre-Primary Schools attended by students in the ages of 3 to 5 years.
O’Level Schools
Schools which offer the first four years of secondary school. Schools are attended by students of ages 13 to 16 years.
Partly Boarding Schools
Schools which offer both live-in facilities for some students and day school facilities for day scholars.
Peri-Urban Schools
Schools located in semi-developed areas with access to most features that urban schools do have access to like Electricity
Primary Schools
Schools that precede Secondary school, and cater to children from about the ages of 4 or 5 to about the ages of 13 and include one early learning year followed by Primary 1 to 7.
Private Schools
Non Government schools.
Rural Schools
Schools located in rural, undeveloped areas across Uganda.
School Rating
A ranking out of 100 points given to primary and secondary schools based on different attributes attached to a school. This ranking is impartial and is not determined by the school.
SDA Schools
Schools founded based on the seventh day Adventist faith
Secondary Schools
Schools following on from Primary schools, that cater to students from about the age of 12. There 2 levels for Secondary School (O’ and A’ level).
Special Needs Schools

Special Needs Students
Students with a disability or a special need: This could be physical, intellectual, behavioural or social.
Special Schools

State schools
Government schools
Teso Schools
Schools located in the Teso Sub-Region of Eastern Uganda.
Tertiary Schools
Schools following on from Secondary schools, that cater to students from about the age of 17.
Toro Schools
Schools located in the Toro Sub-Region of Western Uganda.
UACE
Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education - Certificate awarded upon successful completion of A’ Level.
UCE
Uganda Certificate of Education - Certificate awarded upon successful completion of O’ Level.
UBTEB
The Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB) is a statutory national assessment body established by an Act of Parliament and mandated to streamline, regulate, coordinate and conduct credible national examinations and award Certificates and Diplomas in the Business, Technical and Vocational professions in Uganda.
UNCHE
The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) was established to implement the University and Other Tertiary Act of Parliament (2001) as the regulator of higher education.
UNEB
Uganda National Examinations Board is mandated as the national assessment body in Uganda.
Urban Schools
Schools located in urban centers in Uganda.
Western Schools
Schools Located in the Western Region of Uganda
Westnile Schools
Schools located in the West-Nile Sub-Region of Northern Uganda.
